Allow me to talk to you about committing to a constant and never-ending improvement. When I start thinking about my life, I start thinking about the businesses that we own and some of the things that we've done - it's been kind of 42 years of a constant state of improvement! Trying to move. It's always trying to do better.
One of the things we can do is to ask ourselves tough questions and then you know we've really got to do better as we go forward. I remember a quote that Oliver Cromwell said back, this is you know forever ago, back in the 1600s and he said, “he who stops being better stops being good”. I don't know about you but I don't want to stop being better. I want to be good all the time. I always want to be kind of making some progress - improve in small incremental ways.

When I was 15 years old working at the local pawn shop this guy walked in the store one day and he pulled up in a brand new Cadillac and he was dressed to the nines. This guy had suit and tie, diamond rings, had a gold watch on. I mean this guy was absolutely decked out. I waited on him for a few minutes and then I finally just asked him because you know when you're young you don't have any diplomacy or tack. I went up to him and I said, “Hey, that's such a beautiful car you've got there! And all these diamond rings! How did you make so much money?” He started laughing and he said, “How old are you?” And I said. “Fifteen.” He said, “Let me ask you a question. If you have goals and dreams and you work really hard you can do the same thing.” I said “I know I'm probably not gonna ever have anything.” And he said, “Why not you?”
I want to ask you today, why not you you?

I just want you today to think through learn to ask better questions. We always want to be people of integrity it's always difficult sometimes especially when you're ox is in the ditch when you're the one that's gonna maybe suffer the consequences as a result of what you share and what you tell.
Let me just encourage you a little bit in your business. Be savvy and don't be just blind to the the things that matters at hand and I just want you to ask better questions - “Is there anything else that could impact my decision?” I want to encourage you as a dad, as a husband, as a small business owner, don't leave out important information that could radically impact the lives of other people. You might say, “Well they didn't ask that question and so I didn't tell. Well, I don't know how you feel about that but personally the way I feel about that is the lack of information, an important decision, is the same as telling a lie because it's going to radically impact the way I might vote or the way I might respond or behave to a particular circumstance or situation.

Have you ever noticed in pro sports or even college sports people how they win all the time? Do you know why they win all the time? They know how to recruit. They're the best recruiters on the planet. Those guys know how to pick the team. Why do we think it's any differently in our businesses? We go out and we get the cheapest person. You're like, "Hey, come on you're $12 an hour, we'll take you. You're $8 an hour. You're $20 an hour. You're $50 an hour." Whatever it is that you think is cheap, for whatever that you're having them to do, you pick that person rather than their passion, rather than their heart. You need to pick the right person. You need to go after the talent. The ones that have heart.

Avoid living your personal life like playing not to lose and not to win. I'd like to encourage you to do that. Do not be afraid and tackling things that come in our way. We need to be going forward. Guys, we cannot live so conservative, run the clock out, be complacent (like what's being done by a winning team in ball games when the game is about to end) and not living to win, we are living to protect and to not lose. You will avoid boredom by "playing to win". You will be successful by "playing to win". Life is an adventure. Go forward. Press on!
