What Makes a Successful Professional: How to Build a Tribe That Builds You Up

Posted by Aaron Walker and the VFTT Team on Sep 17, 2021 9:00:00 AM

Having the ability to be vulnerable, authentic, and take accountability will bring you more success than anything else.

Do you feel like all of your attempts to be successful have come to a dead-end? Struggling to make ends meet? Or at least, not doing as well as you know you could?

If any of that sounds like you, you’re not alone. Most people try to find success entirely on their own. They don’t take the time, nor do they want, to build a system of accountability. They push on charging at their goals... and keep falling up short. They simply don’t have the right components in place. Harnessing the power of like-minded people will allow us to do more than we ever could alone…so why don’t we?

Whether that mentality comes from pride, embarrassment, or self-doubt, it’s not serving you. Having the ability to be vulnerable, authentic, and take accountability will bring you more success than anything else. In the book Tribe of Millionaires, Osborn, Hiban, McCarthy, and Rhode discuss the 6 core ideas of accountability. I highly recommend picking it up and giving it a read!

  • The Influence Effect: Your destiny is shaped by those around you.
  • The Multiplier Effect: The right group of people compounds your efforts.
  • The Accountability Effect: Accountability is the world's most powerful force.
  • The Authenticity Effect: You find your true self among those you trust.
  • The Purpose Effect: The right people reveal your richest source of power.
  • The Connection Effect: Your life will be measured by the quality of your relationships.

These outcomes are all a result of using the power of a group. As the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one.” I go even further than that, saying five or six heads is better than two! The more people you have to hold you accountable, the more likely you are to achieve your goals and the more people you have to challenge your problems with.

Your problems don’t stand a chance against a group of strong, disciplined, and accountable people. If you’re interested in joining such a group, visit our website or apply to join a Mastermind group today.

So does one build a tribe? Let’s take a look at some tangible strategies you can practice to build a system of accountability in your life.

1. Identify your strengths and struggles.

Be honest with yourself and identify where you hold yourself back. What skills and habits do you possess that uplift you? What could you bring to the table for others? Where do you need more accountability? Getting honest with ourselves about our strengths and weaknesses is the first step to taking accountability.

As we continue through that process, we’ll see exponential growth in our confidence and the freedom we feel in our daily lives. Many people hesitate to take ownership of their vulnerabilities because they think accountability means losing freedom. That couldn’t be further from the truth!

Once we can identify where we’re struggling, we’re able to reach out to the right people to help us. Having a team to help us lift those burdens and focus on our strengths will propel us like nothing else. Successful entrepreneurs understand the importance of taking ownership of their actions. Creating a tribe provides you with support, friendship, and extreme accountability.

2. Surround yourself with like-minded people.

Something magical happens when you put the right people together in the right ways. Professionals have the drive it takes to be successful, but they understand that even more than money, relationships are the most important thing. They know that in order to be successful, they have to build relationships with the right people.

When you’re surrounded by people who are crushing it in their personal life and business, it’ll push you to do the same. We’ve all heard the saying, “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time around,” and it’s true! Surrounding yourself with people with similar goals, values, and passions will push you way farther than you can go alone.

It’s vital to find individuals who inspire, motivate, and encourage you on your journey. The biggest mistake most entrepreneurs make is trying to do it all on their own. We can achieve more together than we could ever dream of doing by our lonesome self.

3. One sheet to rule it all.

My biggest takeaway from Tribe of Millionaires was the concept of “One Sheet to Rule It All.” Whenever these men met with their group, they had a sheet of paper containing stats of their network, income from the past year, body fat, and a personal rating of their own happiness. They also kept their sheet from the previous meeting to track progress. This paper contained the core metrics of their life, not holding anything back.

Each group member was required to share those stats with the group. These men took their accountability seriously! The more honest we are with those around us and those keeping us accountable, the more apt we are to hold ourselves to the same standards. As you progress on your accountability journey, find people who are on the same mission, and develop your own accountability system. The group should hold you accountable to your absolute highest standards, values, and those you love.
